2012 Chardonnay, Riverbed
Sourced from two neighboring vineyards, Griva and Zabala, in the dried riverbed channel. Both properties are found alongside the seasonal, Arroyo Seco Creek waterway and feature meager and rock-laden surface soil, as granite and shale cobblestones (washed out of the Santa Lucia Mountains) scar the topsoil. The meager topsoil contributes to this already low-yielding section of terrain (howling winds of 25+ knots and dense fogs plague these sites and hamper growth especially during flower and bloom) and result in complex flavors.
The Rivebed Chardonnay was barrel fermented and aged in French oak (20% new). The result is a well balanced wine with great natural acidity and rich, creamy flavors. In the bouquet, aromas of Meyer lemon, Asian pear, tangerine, orange cream, as well as mineral and floral tones mingle together. The palate displays similar flavors with round textures, crisp and focused acidity and a long, lingering finish.
90 points, Very Highly Recommended - California Grapevine, Sept 2014: "attractive, fragrant, spicy, moderately toasty, pear and baked apple aroma with floral and mineral notes..."
91 points - Bacchus & Beery, Dec 10, 2014: "A beautifully balanced chardonnay with a delicate nose of red apple, citrus and hints of wet stone... On the palate, flavors of red apple, pear, Meyer lemon, vanilla and pie spice. A super-long finish offering notes of nutty caramel and brioche."
