2013 Chardonnay, Riverbed

2013 Chardonnay, Riverbed Price: 24.00
Qty.

Sourced from two neighboring vineyards, Griva and Zabala, in the dried riverbed channel. Both properties are found alongside the seasonal, Arroyo Seco Creek waterway and feature meager and rock-laden surface soil, as granite and shale cobblestones (washed out of the Santa Lucia Mountains) scar the topsoil. The meager topsoil contributes to this already low-yielding section of terrain (howling winds of 25+ knots and dense fogs plague these sites and hamper growth especially during flower and bloom) and result in complex flavors.

The Rivebed Chardonnay was barrel fermented and aged in French oak (20% new). The result is a well balanced wine with great natural acidity and rich, creamy flavors.  In the bouquet, aromas of tangerine and other exotic citrus, baked pear, lemon blossom, hazelnut and cream, as well as mineral tones, all mingle together. The palate highlights similar citrus and creamy flavors with round textures, crisp and focused acidity and a long, lingering finish.

Vintrinsic: "Yellow gold to the eye. The nose is exceptionally clean and opens to display attractive complexity and underlying richness. The aroma is dominated by ripe lemon peel, an accent of mandarin orange and a distinctly creamy quality. On the palate, this engaging Chardonnay is caressing and sensual, mouth-filling and harmonious. Beautifully proportioned, with complementary, well-integrated oak, the wine pairs richness and ripe acidity. The finish offers a toasted signature and touch of phenolic grip. A finely crafted example of contemporary barrel-fermented California Chardonnay." Roger Bohmrich MW (04/16).

89 points, Wine Enthusiast: "Buttered nuts, lime spritz, green apple, fragrant honeydew and a shred of pineapple treat the nose on this bottling from a steadily rising appellation. The palate shows lots of pep, blending both light crème fraîche with lemon and lime peels, quite focused." - M.K. (12/1/15)
