Found in the heart of the Arroyo Seco growing region, the Griva Vineyard is located in the midst of a dried riverbed. It is a place where meager, shallow surface soil meets hardpan subsoil just below the surface. Add to those low yielding conditions, the large river rocks that litter the surface as well as howling wind and foggy mornings and you have an ideal location for the cultivation of distinct Chardonnay grapes.
The progeny of Robert Young clone (17) Chardonnay, fruit was hand-harvested on the morning of October 4, 2013. At the winery, the fruit was whole-cluster pressed and inoculated with Prise de Mousse (yeast isolate) following two days of cold stabilization. Racked to six French oak barrels (18% new) the wine was fermented and then aged for nine months; half of that time was spent rested on its lees. Completing malolactic fermentation in cask the wine was bottled on July 22, 2014.
Robert Young selection is an even ripening clone and tends to showcase a rich, tropical nature in the Arroyo Seco AVA. the bouquet features layers of tropical and exotic citrus aromas in concert with banana cream, orange zest, hazelnut and baking spices. On the palate, the texture is round and creamy with ripe tropical flavors carried through the finish.
