2014 Chardonnay, Riverbed
Sourced from contiguous vineyards, Zabala and Griva, in the Arroyo Seco AVA’s ancient, dried Riverbed terrain - a finite and limiting section region, located between two major benches and defined by its granite-based, cobblestone surface soil. In concert with the rock and meager nature of the soil, this locale is plagued by howling winds and fog throughout the growing season. Slow to ripen, the grapes develop complex flavors and retain elevated, natural levels of acidity. Sourcing from adjoining properties, the Mercy Riverbed bottling highlights a very small and compelling portion the Arroyo Seco appellation.
Combining multiple clones, this bottling highlights a specific low-yielding portion of the Arroyo Seco AVA. Barrel fermented and aged in French oak (14% new) this wine displays racy notes of Bearss lime, Nashi pear, lemon peel, honeysuckle, vanilla cream and mineral tones. e palate displays similar flavors with creamy textures, crisp and focused acidity and a long, lingering finish.
92 points - Wine Enthusiast: "Light and delicate aromas of lime curd, vanilla yogurt and a touch of pear custard show in a very pleasing manner on the nose of this vineyard-blend bottling. The palate is expertly rounded, with wet riverstone, yellow apple, lime zest and creamy white fruit like cherimoya and ripe nectarine." - M.K. (9/1/16)
92 points, Gold Medal - Tastings: "Light medium golden yellow color. Fatty aromas of butterscotch, oak, browned butter, and ripe pineapple with a round, tangy, dry medium body and a warming, refreshing, medium-long butter, lemon meringue, and green apple finish with moderate oak. An ode to classic California Chardonnay" (7/19/17)
