Found in the heart of the Arroyo Seco growing region, the Griva Vineyard is located in the midst of a dried riverbed. It is a place where meager, shallow surface soil meets hardpan subsoil just below the surface. Add to those low yielding conditions, the large river rocks that litter the surface as well as howling wind and foggy mornings and you have an ideal location for the cultivation of distinct grapes.
Comprised exclusively of Dijon clone 76 chardonnay, grapes were whole-cluster pressed, transferred to French oak barrels and allowed to ferment naturally on indigenous yeast. Aged for ten months; half of that time was spent rested on its lees with weekly battonage. Completing malolactic fermentation in barrel the wine was bottled on August 5, 2016. Showcasing the racy nature of the Arroyo Seco AVA, the bouquet features layers of Meyer lemon and Crimson King apple mingle with lime spritz, ripe nectarine, spiced-quince paste and mineral tones. On the palate, the texture is creamy with bright orchard and citrus fruit flavors carried through the finish.
91 points, Gold Medal - Tastings.com: "Medium golden yellow color. Candied aromas of pear, pineapple, brioche, and matchstick with a supple, soft, fruity sweet medium body and a warming, medium-length lemon squares, buttered bread, and grilled pear finish with heavy oak. A fruity and buttery Chardonnay perfect for a barbecue.." (7/19/17)
