2017 Marsanne, Griva Vineyard
Found in the heart of the Arroyo Seco, the Griva Vineyard is found in the region’s ancient riverbed channel and the property itself is bisected by the seasonal creek. The topsoil is meager with sandy loam and hard-pan lens found only a few feet below the surface. Add to those low yielding conditions, the large granite galets that litter the surface as well as howling wind and foggy mornings and one has an ideal location for the cultivation of distinct Rhone varieties.
Harvested in mid-September 2017, the Marsanne grapes were picked at 23.2 degrees brix. At the winery the fruit was whole-cluster pressed and racked to tank for two weeks. In tank the juice was first cold-settled (for 2 days) and then fermented. Following fermentation, the wine was transferred to neutral barrels for 7 months of aging. Not having gone through secondary fermentation, the resulting wine is bright and racy. It shows aromas of orchard fruits, lemon curd, white flowers and mineral notes.
